Have you ever wondered why you do the things you do? Why you say the things you say to others, such as "Time flies" or "Well, it's Monday..". You have never said the latter, right? ;).
What is the strongest guiding force in our lives?
Our Beliefs.
If I think I am great at playing the sport of baseball, I will act differently when thinking about it, talking about it, and playing it. I for one, have not had this belief, which is why I stopped playing baseball as a kid, haha.
What do you think the difference is in believing "I am great at this, versus I suck at this", "I am loved versus I am not loved", "I am young versus I am dying"? What effect would these have on the person believing one or the other?
Our beliefs determine what and how we feel about ourselves, other people, and the world.
What can the difference be between someone that believes "we/I must love everybody, and take care of the world", versus "we/I must kill non-believers and terrorists to our country"? These two are both thought structures. The first is of a fireman who was climbing through the burning world trade center to save someone, and the second is of a man whom decided to crash planes and orchestrate terrorist attacks on people of a different belief system.
The beliefs that we have determine our actions, and the actions we take determine our life.
To take a last bright turn,
Think of a time in your life when you took an action that massively changed your life. It could be something that you said or didn't say, a relationship that started or ended, asking someone out, or getting the job you wanted or not getting the job you thought you wanted!
This is the power of our beliefs.
What if we don't know our beliefs?, I'm talking the deep down beliefs. Don't people always mention something about childhood experiences shaping who we are or something? What about beliefs that you have gathered over the years? Are they helping you, or hindering you?
One quote I love is, if we want to win the game, we need to know:
What the rules are
How the score is kept
If we are trying to win at our life, win our version of life with what's important for you; the rules of our life, are our beliefs. I will list questions to figure these out below.
We also need to listen to, figure out what our version of a winning life is. Once we know what we are going for, how we are keeping score, we can either change it, or change our beliefs to match it. This is the power that can help us achieve the life we want, and usually beyond our wildest beliefs.
What is life about? What is life not about?
The greatest source of love in your life is...
Who are you really?
Who are you with your family?
How much is a long time? What's a short time?
Have fun answering these questions. You are now figuring out what the rules are to win!
